Bedward wallpaper in a styled interior, illustrating how to assess wallpaper in a real room

Wallpaper Samples: How to Test a Design Before You Commit

Choosing wallpaper from a screen is a useful first step, but it should not be the final one. Colour changes with light. Scale can feel very different once a pattern enters a real room. And the flooring, paint, furniture and objects you already own will affect how the design reads.

That is why we recommend sampling before you commit.

Move the sample around the room

Do not tape it to one wall and leave it there. Try it beside the window, on the darkest wall and near the doorway. A design that feels soft in direct daylight may become much richer on a shaded wall.

Look at it at different times of day

Morning light, late-afternoon light and artificial evening light can shift a colour dramatically. Live with the sample for a few days if you can. The goal is not to find a wallpaper that looks identical all day; it is to make sure you like the way it changes.

Compare it with the things that are staying

Hold the sample beside your flooring, sofa fabric, curtains, timber, tiles and paint colours. These fixed elements are part of the palette whether you planned them that way or not.

Step back

Wallpaper is experienced across a whole wall, so remember to view the sample from a distance. Look at the room image and repeat information as well as the small piece in your hand. A motif that appears bold up close may feel beautifully balanced when repeated at room scale.

Notice your reaction, not just the match

Matching colours is useful, but it is not the only test. Does the pattern make the room feel more alive? More grounded? More playful? Does it make you want to keep looking? Those reactions matter.

If you are choosing between two designs, put both up and stop trying to decide immediately. Often one starts to feel more natural after you have lived with it for a little while.
